Mitmacht 2025 – A festival that moves. And one that can do far more.

Vienna became, for a few days, the temporary construction kit of our democracies. Nothing more – but also nothing less. Mitmacht 2025 isn’t a glossy conference; it’s a living laboratory. People from schools, cities, initiatives, research, art, and public administration come together – not to applaud, but to co-create. And you can feel it. The energy is real. The conversations are direct. The attitude: “Let’s just do this.”
The team at Faktor D is betting on something increasingly rare: spaces where not everything is finished yet. Where questions are allowed. Where you’re free to experiment. Where processes matter more than programs. And it’s precisely this openness that makes the festival so valuable – while also revealing its limits at times.
I joined the “Participation and Democracy” lab. Around twenty people, a few big questions, and a shared goal: to craft future scenarios that help us rethink participation. What emerged were narratives intended for Faktor D’s upcoming Democracy Playbook – and surprisingly many moments that showed how deeply we all long for new forms of acting together.
At the festival, I met people who think about democracy in very different, but always practical ways. Judith Galka, for example, who transforms libraries into vibrant third places. Daniela Ekl, who draws conversations and makes thoughts visible. And Daniel Graf, who creates stages for participation – something that’s obvious the moment you talk to him.
Mariam-Sophie Karl is working to reopen cities for people, and Tassilo Seidl-Zellbrugg brings fresh ideas for European democracy projects through IG-EuroVision. Gregor Dehmel brings politics back into everyday life – with an uplifting, encouraging sense of humor – and Sarah Schneider from the Körber Foundation reminds us that no one stands alone.
Astrid Kirchhoff from Hummingbirds shows what becomes possible when people truly listen and share – acting together because “alone simply isn’t enough.”
And Katharina Korsunsky, who bridges culture and education, describes the festival perfectly: a space full of democracy-strengthening energy.
I meet Karin Brunnmayr, Viennese and founder of Bureau K, on the sidelines of the festival – with an approach that fits perfectly: art and culture as places of genuine resonance for people.
My conclusion?
I take: extremely valuable. connective. committed. and exceptionally well facilitated.
I wish: more diverse, shorter, sharper panels. Less on-stage self-talk, more room for the audience. And then: think BIG. Turn many small initiatives into one truly large one. Bring even more foundations and companies on board (don’t they carry major responsibility?). And think PRO. A bit more professional, prominent, bold. We can – no, we must – hold ourselves to that standard.
What if: we tapped into the synergies that were so tangible here? Why not an even more international format? A globally parallel Mitmacht – networked, distributed, like the Global GovJams. And why not remote labs working simultaneously, learning from each other, and reinforcing one another?
Mitmacht 2025 was both: inspiration and mandate. A moment that shows what already works – and what still needs to grow. In the democracy capital 2025, in Vienna.
Mitmacht 2025 – Ein Festival, das bewegt. Und das noch viel mehr kann.
Wien war für ein paar Tage der provisorische Hauptstadt-Baukasten unserer Demokratien. Nicht mehr, aber auch nicht weniger. Mitmacht 2025 ist kein Hochglanzkongress, sondern ein lebendiges Labor. Menschen aus Schulen, Städten, Initiativen, Forschung, Kunst und Verwaltung kommen zusammen – nicht um zu applaudieren, sondern um mitzugestalten. Und das merkt man. Die Energie ist echt. Die Gespräche direkt. Die Haltung: „Wir machen das jetzt einfach.“
Die Macher*innen von Faktor D setzen auf etwas, das selten geworden ist: Räume, in denen nicht schon alles fertig ist. Wo Fragen erlaubt sind. Wo man experimentieren darf. Wo Prozesse wichtiger sind als Programme. Und zugleich ist es genau diese Offenheit, die das Festival so wertvoll macht – und an manchen Stellen aber auch an seine Grenzen bringt.
Ich war im Lab (Labor) „Beteiligung und Demokratie“. Rund zwanzig Menschen, ein paar große Fragen und ein gemeinsames Ziel: Zukunftsbilder entwerfen, die uns helfen, Beteiligung neu zu denken. Heraus kamen Narrative, die ins geplante Demokratie-Playbook von Faktor D einfließen sollen – und erstaunlich viele Momente, in denen spürbar war, wie sehr wir alle nach neuen Formen des gemeinsamen Handelns suchen.
Auf dem Festival begegne ich Menschen, die Demokratie sehr unterschiedlich, aber immer praktisch denken. Judith Galka etwa, die Bibliotheken zu lebendigen Dritten Orten macht. Daniela Ekl, die Gespräche zeichnet und Gedanken sichtbar werden lässt. Und Daniel Graf, der Bühnen für Beteiligung schafft – etwas, das man sofort merkt, wenn man mit ihm spricht.
Mariam-Sophie Karl arbeitet daran, Städte wieder für Menschen zu öffnen und Tassilo Seidl-Zellbrugg bringt mit IG-EuroVision frische Ideen für europäische Demokratieprojekte ein. Gregor Dehmel holt Politik in den Alltag zurück – und zwar mit einem erfrischend-mutmachenden Humor – und Sarah Schneider von der Körber-Stiftung erinnert daran, dass niemand allein steht.
Astrid Kirchhoff von Hummingbirds zeigt, wie viel entsteht, wenn Menschen wirklich zuhören und teilen – gemeinsam handeln, weil “allein schlicht nicht reicht”.
Und Katharina Korsunsky, die Kultur und Bildung zusammenbringt, beschreibt das Festival treffend: ein Raum voller demokratiefördernder Energie.
Karin Brunnmayr, Wienerin und Inhaberin des Bureau K treffe ich am Rande des Festivals, aber mit einem Ansatz, der passt: Kunst und Kultur als Orte echter Resonanz für Menschen.
Mein Fazit?
I take: extrem wertvoll. vernetzend. engagiert. und wirklich hervorragend moderiert.
I wish: Podien und Panels diverser, kürzer, impulsiver. Weniger Selbstgespräch auf der Bühne, mehr Raum fürs Publikum. Und dann: think BIG. Aus vielen kleinen Initiativen eine wirklich große machen. Noch mehr Stiftungen und Unternehmen (Haben genau die nicht eine große Mitverantwortung?!) ins Boot holen. Und think PRO. Eine Spur professioneller, prominenter, mutiger. Wir dürfen, nein müssen diesen Anspruch haben.
What if: Wir nutzen die Synergien, die hier so greifbar waren. Warum nicht ein noch internationaleres Format? Ein global parallel stattfindendes Mitmacht – vernetzt, verteilt, wie die Global GovJams.
Und warum nicht remote Labs, die gleichzeitig arbeiten, voneinander lernen und sich gegenseitig verstärken?
Mitmacht 2025 – das war beides: Inspiration und Arbeitsauftrag. Ein Moment, der zeigt, was schon funktioniert – und was noch wachsen muss. In der Demokratiehauptstadt 2025, in Wien.
